Van Chan district in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai currently has more than 4,200 hectares of tea, producing some 3,000 tonnes of fresh tea buds a year with a total revenue of over VND 70 billion.
Thanks to tea, thousands of poor, ethnic minority households in the district have escaped poverty and enjoyed more comfortable lives.
In order to increase the quality of tea, tea growers in Van Chan have planted new tea varieties such as Bat Tien tea, Phu Van Tien tea and Kim Tuyen tea which have proved to be quite appropriate to the local conditions.
With these new tea varieties, the tea productivity and quality have been much improved. For example, the Phuc Van Tien tea has an average productivity of 8-10 tonnes of fresh bud a hectare worth VND 20-30 million a year.
