US companies look to doing long-term business in Viet Nam

Senior representatives of 14 leading US companies currently on a US Trade Mission in Viet Nam say they have come to study the possibility of doing long- term business in the country.

The remark was made by Assistant Secretary of the US Department of Commerce, Israel Hernandez, in a meeting with media in Hanoi on June 16.

Hernandez said the trade mission delegates are very impressed with the economic achievements Viet Nam has gained over the past years and have come to Viet Nam to seriously assess the prospect of doing long-term business in the country.

Although Viet Nam is now facing big challenges, the country’s economy will continue its development, Hernandez said.

The US official, who is also the US Department of Commerce’s Commercial Service International Trade Administration Director General, said that what the Southeast Asian country has gained in the past seven to eight years is an indicator for its economic future.

In his opinion, Viet Nam has a great chance to develop in the 21 st century.

Referring to the Vietnamese government’s efforts to address the challenges, the official said these are “clear steps” towards a market economy. He added the government is paying due attention to solve the difficulties.

The US Trade Mission will be in Viet Nam until June 20. It includes leading companies of not only the US but also the world, which are operating in fields such as manufacturing, energy, transportation, telecommunication, education and the environment. (VNA)
