VN becomes Germany’s 2nd largest coffee exporter

Viet Nam has emerged as Germany’s second largest coffee exporter thanks to the local people’s growing demand for the product.

Figures released by the German Federal Statistical Office show that Viet Nam shipped 234,000 tonnes of coffee to Germany in 2007, just behind Brazil which supplied up to 288,000 tonnes for the European nation.

The office reported that Germany’s coffee and tea imports increased by 33% from 2000-2007. The country bought a total of 1.1 million tonnes of coffee worth 2 billion Euros last year, up 31.5% in volume and 24% in value.

According to the office, coffee is a popular drink of the German people who averagely consumed up to 13 kg each in 2007.

Last year, Germany spent 112.2 million Euros importing 48,000 tonnes of tea, a respective year-on-year increases of 2% and 34%.

China topped the list of Germany’s tea suppliers with 12,000 tonnes, followed by India, 7,000 tonnes.
